Pediatric Lung & Combined Heart-Lung Transplantation

Lung Transplantation: Program Overview

Our multidisciplinary care team evaluates candidates and treat their diseases at every stage, in one location, and attend to all related issues for patients and families. This comprehensive treatment ensures that every aspect of a child’s life is considered during treatment. Our patients stay at or nearby the hospital for several months after treatment and are followed daily to ensure the best possible outcome.

Pediatric Conditions Treated:

With one of the best post-operative outcomes for pediatric patients in the world, our lung transplant team at Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital Stanford has performed more than 99 pediatric lung transplants and combined heart-lung transplants since 1988. Our team works closely with the Center for Advanced Lung (CEAL) Therapies and experts from our Pulmonary & Cystic Fibrosis Center. Together, we provide treatment for the full range of chronic diseases that may require lung transplantation, from cystic fibrosis to complex congenital pulmonary vascular and cardiac diseases, interstitial lung disease, severe pulmonary hypertension leading to end stage lung disease, genetic defects, and more.

Lung and heart-lung transplantation is a highly specialized and generally rare option for treatment for children with end-stage lung disease. We are one of the 17 hospitals in the U.S. that participate in the International Pediatric Lung Transplant Collaborative (IPLTC).

Our Care Team

When transplant is necessary, our experts in cardiothoracic transplant surgery, transplant pulmonology and transplant cardiology, along with a multidisciplinary team composed of highly specialized transplant nurse coordinators, social workers, psychologists, dietitians, and pharmacists, offer comprehensive, whole child & family support to lung & heart-lung transplant candidates before, during, and after transplantation.

Transplant Outcomes Report

Heart I Kidney I Liver & Intestinal I Lung & Heart-Lung I Multi-organ

As this report demonstrates, our approach to solid organ transplant has achieved some of the best outcomes in the country for the more than 2,000 solid organ transplants we have conducted since our founding. Many of these transplants were for the youngest, smallest, and most acutely ill organ-failure patients.
