Translating Discoveries

School of Medicine Strategic Plan

Learn how the Center for Biomedical Imaging at Stanford fits into the larger strategic vision of the Stanford School of Medicine. The mission statement of the School of Medicine related to translational research clearly states the significance of the centers and institutes to the central goal of the School:

"We will promote the development of those interdisciplinary research collaborations most likely to lead to improved health through the exploitation of new knowledge of biosciences and disease mechanisms. We will pursue new configurations of research collaborations and remove existing barriers to innovation and collaborative discovery. We will pursue the development of the research facilities and infrastructure required to support the effective collaboration of bioscientists and clinical scholars."

Strategic Centers

  • The Center for Biomedical Imaging at Stanford (CBIS)

The Center for Biomedical Imaging at Stanford (CBIS) emphasizes applied biomedical imaging and the unification of imaging resources and researchers. In this way, CBIS enables the development of innovative imaging methods that will enrich basic research and translational medicine from bench to bedside and from bedside to society. Our continued success in biomedical imaging depends on the ability of our highly trained, multidisciplinary teams to capture the exciting opportunities in the field. By providing biomedical imaging resources, the Center ensures that Stanford remains on the leading edge of imaging science. CBIS is directed by an advisory board composed of the following Stanford faculty members: Donna Bouley, DVM, PhD, Comparative Medicine; Sam Gambhir, MD, PhD, Radiology; Gary Glazer, MD, Radiology; Pierre Khuri-Yakub, PhD, Electrical Engineering; Michael McConnell, MD, MSEE, Cardiovascular Medicine; Norbert Pelc, PhD, Radiology; Hans Ringertz, MD, Radiology; Stephen Smith, PhD, Molecular and Cellular Physiology; and Brian Wandell, PhD, Psychology.

  • Stanford Center for Clinical Informatics (SCCI)

The Stanford Center for Clinical Informatics is home to the STRIDE Project, which has created an integrated SUMC clinical data warehouse (CDW) for research purposes. The CDW is a source, for research purposes, of clinical imaging reports performed on both pediatric and adult SUMC patients. The STRIDE Patient Cohort Discovery Tool integrates real-time, full-text searching of clinical imaging reports with diagnosis, demographic, and procedure data to identify research patient cohorts. STRIDE also supports a number of custom-built research data management systems, including the ability to store, annotate, and retrieve image data (see: http://clinicalinformatics.stanford.edu/STRIDE/derm.html)

Strategic Institutes

  • The Neuroscience Institute at Stanford

(formerly the Stanford Brain Research Institute)Deciphering the mysteries of the human brain requires a deeper understanding of the interplay between genes, cells, circuits, and behavior. Our institute unites experts in these areas as they investigate how the brain develops, the biological causes of developmental disorders, the mechanisms that enable the brain to recover from injury, and both normal and abnormal behavior.

  • Stanford Cancer Center (SCC)

The Stanford Cancer Center (SCC) focuses the world-class expertise of more than 240 researchers and clinicians on the most critical issues in cancer research and medicine today. These dedicated individuals work together in multidisciplinary teams to unravel cancer's secrets and to transform the latest detection, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention discoveries into the most advanced cancer therapies available. Combining these advances with comprehensive support services, the SCC is committed to giving patients every clinical and technological advantage in the prevention and treatment of cancer.

  • Stanford Cardiovascular Institute

Our history of leadership in research, clinical, and educational programs in cardiovascular medicine provides a firm foundation for our institute's goal of being the world's top heart program. We will continue exploring such areas as the genetics of heart disease and the development of cardiac assist devices, new surgical techniques, and methods of repairing heart damage.

  • Stanford Institute for Immunity, Transplantation and Infection

Understanding the immune system's ability to defend the body against foreign invaders at the molecular and cellular level--and ultimately how to control it--is our goal. We will examine the immune system on three different levels: how to make it more effective at preventing micro-organisms from flourishing; how to quell it when it attacks the body in autoimmune conditions, such as multiple sclerosis; and how to keep it from rejecting transplanted organs.

  • Stanford Institute for Stem Cell Biology and Regenerative Medicine

The Stanford Institute for Stem Cell Biology and Regenerative Medicine is at the forefront of a groundbreaking approach to biomedical research and patient care. Curative in its intent, this approach aims to harness the power of stem cells-master cells from which all specialized cells and tissues in our bodies are derived-to target and remedy the root causes of cancer, cardiovascular disease, autoimmune disease, neurodegenerative disorders, and other diseases with genetic origins.
