Meet Our Team
Kiana Amaral
San Francisco State University
Kiana is an undergraduate at San Francisco State University majoring in Biology with a concentration in Physiology and minoring in Computing Applications and Chemistry. With research experience in a computational biochemistry lab, she is interested in interdisciplinary research. She plans on becoming a physician and helping underserved communities through practicing medicine, community-based research, health policy, and community organizing. Outside of academics, she enjoys baking, crocheting, and playing music.
Ethan Bakal
New York University
Ethan Bakal is an undergraduate at New York University studying Global Public Health and Biology. He is interested in working with underserved populations and is currently employed an intern at the Atlanta-based nonprofit Global Health Crisis Coordination Center. In his free time, Ethan enjoys learning new languages, exercising, and playing with his dogs.
Kavenpreet Bal
University of California, Davis
Kavenpreet Bal recently graduated from the University of California, Davis with a B.S. in Biological Sciences and a minor in Political Science. During his undergraduate studies, he gained extensive research experience in trying to reduce the onset of cardiomyopathy as a byproduct of anthracycline metabolism in chemotherapeutic patients. He aspires to get his Masters in either Epidemiology or Global Health, through which he can dissect the social, genetic, and environmental factors that make Indian subpopulations more susceptible to non-communicable diseases; he aspires to combat health illiteracy, inequitable policies, and cultural stigma surrounding mental health through research-based health intervention and policy advocacy. In the future, he seeks to integrate his interests in medicine, research, global health, and policy into a career.
Ching Yin (Vanessa) Chan
Hong Kong University
Chan Ching Yin, Vanessa is a current second-year medical student at the University of Hong Kong, and will be having an intercalated Clinical Medicine Degree focusing on Cardiovascular Studies at the University of Glasgow. She hopes to acquire generic research skills and helps in preventive medicine, promoting health and reducing the prevalence of some chronic diseases. In her pastime, she enjoys travelling, cooking, painting and doing workouts. Also, she devotes her time to charity work and helps the needy in society. Gradually, she develops empathy which is crucial in her career as a medical doctor.
Ananya Ganesh
Stanford University
Ananya Ganesh is an undergraduate at Stanford University. She is interested in exploring how technology, data, and policy can work together to improve healthcare delivery to vulnerable populations. She advocates for closing opportunity gaps in education and is an outreach mentor with SWE where she teaches high school girls to build maker projects. She loves woodworking, cooking, archery, and music.
Daphne Ih
Emory University
Daphne is a rising sophomore at Emory University planning to major in Neuroscience & Behavioral Biology with a minor in Political Science. Ever since her first medical mission to the Philippines in 2019, Daphne has been invested in global health and epidemiology, and hopes that these interests can inform her future career as a practicing physician. Outside of her studies, she enjoys playing lacrosse, baking endless batches of brownies, and tending to her tiny plant zoo.
Armaan Jamal
John Hopkins University
Armaan Jamal is a rising junior at Johns Hopkins University double majoring in Molecular and Cellular Biology and Chemistry. Academically, he has an aptitude towards neurological disorders after having experience in research labs that investigated the molecular mechanisms of various neurological disorders and he looks forward to analyzing population data to improve patient care for those that suffer from such neurological disorders. Some of his hobbies include trying new cuisines, exploring the world of fragrance and perfumery and physical fitness.
Nadine Jawad
Stanford University
Nadine Jawad is a Knight-Hennessy Scholar and M1 student at Stanford Medical School. Previously she completed her B.A. degree in Public Policy at the University of Michigan Ford School and her masters of philosophy on the Rhodes Scholarship at Oxford University. She is interested in primary care and public health, which is why she is excited to engage in big data and learn to be more comfortable with numbers this summer.
Swara Kalva
University of Chiacago
Swara Kalva is a rising senior at the University of Chicago majoring in Biology with a specialization in Global Health Sciences. She is interested in studying the effects of biomarkers and environmental exposures on health, particularly within underserved populations. In her free time, she enjoys biking, dancing, and doing crossword puzzles!
Mansi Kaushik
University of California, Los Angeles
Mansi Kaushik is a rising sophomore at the University of California, Los Angeles pursuing public health. She is interested in studying culturally competent ways to harness media and technology to promote health information and make the information more patient-centered and interesting for populations to learn. Outside of academics, Mansi runs her own Youtube channel, plays volleyball, and unwinds with smoothies and her favorite Disney and Bollywood movies.
Austin Le
University of California, Berkeley
Austin Le is an incoming Master's student in Environmental Health Sciences at UC Berkeley School of Public Health, where he hopes to study environmental epigenetics, children's health, and Asian American health disparities. He received simultaneous degrees in Integrative Biology and Molecular Environmental Biology from UC Berkeley where he pursued research projects in public health genomics, computational toxicology, and neuroscience alongside community-based projects in Southeast Asian youth mentorship and Asian American health/research advocacy. On rest days, you can find him hiking the nearest trails, trying new recipes, or playing his ukulele.
Molly Li
Emory University
Molly Li, a rising junior, is majoring in Nursing and minoring in Economics at Emory University. Besides studying Anatomy and Biology, she is also interested in using the knowledge she learned in Health Economics and Data Science to tackle public health problems. Some of her hobbies include doing yoga, drawing, and cooking. She's currently on the road to finish making 200 different dishes at the end of summer!
Ngan Nguyen
Fulbright University
Ngan Nguyen is an undergraduate at Fulbright University Vietnam, majoring in Clinical Psychology. With research experience in the post-traumatic experience of abuse survivors, she is interested in studying the interplay between psychotherapy and medical treatment. She is passionate about providing individualized support for vulnerable populations, as well as advocating for mental health inclusive changes in the current hospital system and public health policies of Asian countries.
Krithi Pachipala
Rice University
Krithi Pachipala is a rising senior at Rice University studying Social Policy Analysis and Neuroscience. With previous experience working with patients with traumatic brain injuries, she is excited to look into AI, database research, and public health care for these marginalized populations. Outside of research, she is involved on Rice Riyaaz, a Bollywood fusion dance team, and advocates for menstrual equity through the club PERIOD.
Zachary Rezler
McMaster University
Zachary Rezler recently finished his fourth year at McMaster University to complete a Bachelor of Health Sciences (Honours) degree and Concurrent Certificate in Immunology, Microbiology, and Virology. His hobbies include swimming, badminton, dance, escape rooms, and volunteering at his local youth centre with underserved populations. Zachary hopes to pursue a career in medicine and population health and is eager to foster new research skills with peers so that he can play an active role in identifying and addressing health disparities across North America.
Vishal Shankar
Emory University
Vishal Shankar is a rising junior at Emory University studying Chemistry and Economics on the pre-med track. Because of his research experience with structural biology and viral therapeutics, he is eager to obtain a new perspective on the intersection of medical technology, clinical research, and healthcare innovation to further inform his career goals. Outside of academics, he loves to learn piano, play tennis, and try new foods.
Priyanshi Sharma
University of California, Berkeley
Priyanshi Sharma is an undergraduate at the University of California, Berkeley majoring in Data Science and Computer Science. With previous research experience as a Data Science Research Fellow, she is interested in working with medical technology, data science, and Artificial Intelligence to improve the diagnostic process and early prediction of diseases. She is also passionate about music, nature, and sports.
Haoming Shi
University of California, Santa Barbara
Haoming is a third-year student at University of California, Santa Barbara majoring in Statistics with a concentration in Data Science. Academically, he is interested in the application of statistical analysis and machine learning in healthcare and plans to pursue a graduate degree in Biostatistics. Outside of academics, he enjoys playing soccer and the guitar, and is a big fan of anime.
Ranjana Vittal
University of California, Los Angeles
Ranjana Vittal is a first year Masters student in Electrical and Computer Engineering at UCLA. She did her undergraduate studies in India, majoring in Electronics Engineering and a minor in Computer Science. She has prior work experience in Data Analytics at PwC. She is interested in the applications of data science and machine learning, particularly in healthcare and medicine. She wants to take her learnings at Stanford CARE and apply it to her future research pursuits. Outside of academics, she enjoys travelling, swimming, listening to music and watching movies.
Natalie Wang
University of California, Los Angeles
Natalie Wang finished her second year at UCLA majoring in Computational Biology. With an interest in research, she is an intern in the Wang Lab at UCLA Health, where she performs RNA-seq data analysis. When she is not in class, she is marching on the field with the UCLA Marching Band, and she enjoys volunteering with her Band Fraternity Kappa Kappa Psi.
Ryan Wang
Rice University
Ryan Wang is a rising sophomore at Rice University studying Neuroscience and Computer Science. He is particularly interested in mental heath and the applications of computation and machine learning in the context of global health research. In his free time, he loves reading, running, speedsolving Rubik's Cubes, and playing soccer.
Ziqing Wang
Cornell University
Ziqing Wang is a junior at Cornell University majoring in statistical science and psychology. She is interested in statistics and data analysis in public health and plans to obtain a graduate degree in biostatistics. In her free time, she enjoys reading, cooking, and trying out different cuisines.
Alicia Zhu
New York University
Alicia Zhu is an undergraduate at New York University majoring in Global Public Health/Biology. She is interested in studying culturally-influenced health values and examining healthcare system limitations that hinder medical treatment accessibility, with research interests in cardiovascular and reproductive health. During her free time, she enjoys learning new hip-hop and K-pop dances, hiking steep trails, and trying new desserts.
