Unit 1: Methods of Use

Purpose

This activity provides a script that teachers can use to initiate discussions about cannabis/marijuana use as it relates to adolescents.  

Preparation

Procedure

This PowerPoint provides an overview of what students should know about the various methods of cannabis use, including the risks associated with each methods.  The second half of the presentation includes a hands-on research activity for students. 

Purpose

To learn about the various methods of use and their associated harms through an interactive lesson that allows students to explore what they know and don't know about various forms of cannabis.

Preparation

Materials Needed: Computer, Internet Access, Projector, one printed set of materials for each of the 8 groups

Handout: One printed set of materials for each Group, 1-8 

Procedure

Review the "Cannabis: Methods of Use" PowerPoint to facilitate this activity. The first part consists of informational slides reviewing the various methods of use and their potential risks. Then you will divide students into 8 groups and each group will review some materials on their assigned method of use and will also have the option of finding additional online resources as they answer the questions listed on their group's worksheet. Each group will then present to the rest of the class on what they learned about their assigned method of use. Please note that 3 groups will research edibles, as they are of particular concern to adolescent health. The activity will be summarized with a few concluding slides.

Purpose

This activity should not be the first activity used in the toolkit, but after a presentation on marijuana where some potential harm for using marijuana has already been discussed, especially after some brain development discussions.

1)    To review the potential harm that comes with using marijuana.

2)    To understand that any use of marijuana may bring along some potential harm.

3)    To understand that the harm of using marijuana comes with different levels of potential harm.

4)    To see that all decisions made while having potential harm,  there are some that are generally agreed upon (like not using marijuana or if you are going to use waiting till you are 21)  have the lowest potential of harm.

This activity is a Kahoot quiz, along with instructions, that you can use with your students to gain their understanding of the material presented.  You can give this quiz using the Kahoot.it web interface, making the quiz a fun contest between the students, or just the old-fashioned way of handing out a quiz.

Discussion guides are intended to facilitate communication between caregiver and student after the unit is taught. Students can review the content from the classroom with their caregivers and then discuss their thoughts using the Discussion Guide to start the conversation.
