SCI Equity Impact Research Grant Challenge Award

2024

A $100,000 Community-Driven Cancer Equity Grand Challenge Award was awarded to Jennifer Caswell-Jin, MD, and Allison Kurian, MD, for their project titled “Cascade testing for genetic cancer risk and follow-up care in rural Californian communities.”

Project summary:

Identifying women at high genetic risk of breast cancer and intensifying their screening is a highly effective approach to reducing breast cancer mortality, but there are major disparities in access to testing and care. In this study, we will focus on follow-up care for people found to carry a genetic risk variant, including cascade testing, where families of people with known genetic risk variants are tested for those variants, in poor and rural counties. Working with community partners, we will implement a virtual tool for cascade testing and test it, with and without a community-based navigator, in these counties. We will also conduct qualitative interviews and surveys of patients and clinicians in the Stanford catchment area to understand the barriers and opportunities for improving access to cascade genetic testing and intensive screening, generating foundational knowledge to motivate future studies.
