The Biden-Harris Administration announced the White House Challenge to End Hunger and Build Healthy Communities. The Challenge is a nationwide call to action to stakeholders across all of society to make bold commitments to advance President Biden’s goal to end hunger and reduce diet-related diseases by 2030—all while reducing disparities.

SCI member Lisa Goldman Rosas, PhD, MPH, assistant professor of the Department of Epidemiology and Population Health and Medicine, and University of California San Francisco researchers, along with Instacart, have risen to the Challenge to examine the impact of nutrition security interventions. Goldman Rosa’s research will support key pillars of the National Strategy on Hunger, Nutrition, and Health released by the White House last September.

Goldman Rosa was recently awarded an SCI Innovation Award for her research entitled “Promoting nutrition security among colorectal cancer survivors.” Over 1.3 million Americans are living with colorectal cancer (CRC), the 4th most common cancer and 2nd leading cause of cancer death in the US. There is strong evidence that a nutritious diet rich in whole grains, fruits, and vegetables reduces the risk of death from CRC. However, only 9% of survivors reported that their diet was consistent with American Cancer Society nutrition guidelines based on the intake of whole grains, fruits, vegetables, red meat, and processed meat. Goldman Rosas aims to develop an intervention to promote nutrition security for racially/ethnically diverse CRC survivors.
