Stanford appoints new leader to expand impact in early drug development

Pamela Munster brings her expertise in translational medicine, early-phase clinical trials, and precision oncology to the Early Drug Development Program, helping turn scientific discoveries into safer, more personalized treatments for patients.

Pamela Munster, MD, will join the Stanford Cancer Institute as the inaugural associate director for early detection and interception research on August 1, 2026. She will also assume a faculty appointment as a professor in the Stanford Medicine Division of Oncology

As part of the Stanford Cancer Institute leadership team, she will work alongside Vivek Subbiah, MD, in the Early Drug Development Program to expand Stanford’s capabilities in early-phase cancer clinical trials, which evaluate the effectiveness and safety of promising therapeutics and treatment strategies. 

Munster has served as the principal investigator on multiple first-in-human early-phase clinical trials and leads National Institutes of Health (NIH)-funded laboratory research. She is recognized for her leadership in translational oncology, which advances scientific discoveries into patient care, and precision oncology, where clinicians tailor treatment to the specific biology of a patient’s tumor. 

“Dr. Munster’s leadership in precision oncology, hereditary cancer, and cancer prevention aligns closely with the goals of our Early Drug Development Program,” Steven Artandi, MD, PhD, director of the Stanford Cancer Institute, said. “With the complementary expertise of Dr. Munster and Dr. Subbiah, Stanford is positioned to expand viable treatment options for patients with advanced and treatment-resistant cancer.”

Munster's research centers on developing cancer therapeutics tailored to the unique genetic and biological features of a patient's cancer, with an emphasis on breast cancer and other solid tumors, hereditary cancers, including those associated with BRCA mutations, and understanding how tumors develop resistance to treatment. 

Her work includes immunotherapies, hormone-based targeted therapies, drugs that block cancer growth pathways, and treatments that interfere with how cancer cells regulate genes or repair damaged DNA. Because many of these modalities can be considered for early interception, which treats precancerous or very early cancer cells, they can ultimately lead to prevention by stopping disease progression before invasive cancer develops.

She joins Stanford from UC San Francisco, where she served as director of the Early Phase Clinical Trials Unit, co-leader of the Center for BRCA Research, and co-leader of the Molecular Oncology Program. An author of over 145 original research articles, she has published in premier journals including the New England Journal of Medicine, Journal of the American Medical Association, Lancet Oncology, Journal of Clinical Oncology, and Annals of Oncology. She is also a named inventor on multiple issued and pending patents advancing innovative precision oncology strategies and drug-delivery platforms.

A practicing clinical oncologist, Munster specializes in caring for patients with advanced and treatment-resistant breast cancer.
