In memory of Shoshana Levy, PhD

Soshana Levy

The Stanford Cancer Institute (SCI) mourns the passing of our beloved SCI member Shoshana Levy, PhD. Dr. Levy passed away from metastatic cancer on November 16, 2022, surrounded by her loving family.

Dr. Levy and her husband, SCI leader Ron Levy, MD, met in the laboratory as students at the Weizmann Institute of Science in Rehovot, Israel, in 1967. The Levys raised a beautiful family together and ran their respective labs side-by-side up until her death. Their partnership in both science and life was a true inspiration to us all.

She is best known for discovering tetraspanins, a family of cell surface proteins that play an important role in cancer metastasis and the immune system. Dr. Levy was an active member of the SCI’s Scientific Review Committee, where she provided invaluable insights into the scientific merit of Stanford cancer clinical trials.

Throughout her career, Dr. Levy inspired many young scientists and was a strong advocate for women in science. Colleagues around the globe describe her as a generous collaborator, always willing to share reagents and cell lines. We will miss her honesty, integrity, and her beautiful smile. May her memory be a blessing.
