Elena Monti presents at the 2025 European Council of Sports Science Meeting
Postdoctoral fellow Elena Monti, PhD presented her work at the 2025 European Council of Sports Science Meeting held from July 1-4, 2025 in Rimini Italy. Her talk focused on her efforts to develop a spatial proteomic and transcriptomic muscle atlas of sarcopenia.
Aging leads to a gradual loss of muscle mass and strength, with sarcopenia representing a severe form affecting around 50 million people globally. Dr. Monti’s research integrates advanced single-cell and spatial technologies to create the first matched transcriptomic and proteomic atlas of human aging and sarcopenia, revealing key cellular and molecular changes, including muscle denervation, mitochondrial dysfunction, and immune cell infiltration. Her findings highlight increased levels of the enzyme 15-PGDH in sarcopenic muscle, which is linked to reduced levels of the muscle-regenerating molecule PGE2. These insights offer promising directions for identifying diagnostic biomarkers and potential therapeutic targets for sarcopenia.
