"Stem Cells to the Rescue" reviewed in Science and Harvard Magazine
Stem Cells to the Rescue, a children's book by Helen M. Blau and Margery J. Fain, was reviewed in Science Advisor on November 29, 2024 and in Harvard Magazine on December 13, 2024.
In the Science Advisor review, first grader Isaac Nusinovich Ucko and his mom, Senior Editor at Science Yevgeniya Nusinovich, were the reveiwers. The review opened making the point that discussions on stem cell ethics and therapies often reveal a lack of understanding among the public, including politicians. With rhymes and illustration, Stem Cells to the Rescue made it easy for six-year-old reviewer Isaac to grasp basic stem cell concepts. After reading, he learned that stem cells can replicate or specialize into various cell types. As an editor and co-reviewer, his mother appreciated the book’s realistic portrayal of stem cell science, noting current limitations of stem cell therapies and available treatments for patients while touching upon at upcoming research developments. The reviewers thought that overall Stem Cells to the Rescue successfully combined fun and education, making it an excellent resource for young science enthusiasts eager to learn about medicine and biology.
The Harvard Magazine review highlighted the longstanding friendship between the co-authors and how well their varied experience synergized in this effort. It also commented favorably on the rhymes in the book, highlighting “The stem cell team lives in your body,/Replaces parts when they are shoddy” as a favorite exerpt.
