SASI Summer Internship Acceptance and Matriculation Policy
1. How Our Matching and Acceptance Process Works
SASI uses a holistic matching process.
We consider each applicant’s essays, goals, preparation, and program rankings to identify the internship experiences that best fit their interests and developmental needs.
A student may be matched to more than one SASI program.
An applicant may match to a set of programs rather than a single one. This reflects the reality that several of our programs can serve their goals well.
2. What an “Acceptance Billet” Means
When a student is admitted, they receive an acceptance billet.
This billet lists all of the programs they matched to during the review process.
- The billet is not a guaranteed seat in every program listed.
- It is an authorization to register for any program in that billet that still has capacity.
- The billet gives families a fair opportunity to choose from multiple strong options, but programs with limited capacity fill quickly.
3. Why Seats Are Not Guaranteed Until Payment Is Submitted
Program enrollment is confirmed only when tuition payment is completed.
A student who has matched to "Internship A", for example, has permission to enroll, but they do not hold a seat until payment is received.
If they wait, the sequence is simple:
- "Internship A" seats continue to be claimed by other accepted students.
- Once "Internship A" fills, those seats are no longer available to anyone, even if they were originally matched to it.
- The student may still enroll in any remaining program listed in their billet with available spots.
In past years, confusion arose because applicants assumed that matching to "Internship A "meant a reserved seat. It does not.
A match indicates eligibility and permission. A reservation happens only after tuition is paid.
We rely on families to monitor deadlines and complete payment within the stated timeframe. SASI does not issue repeated reminders or follow-up notices for unpaid seats. If payment is not received on time, the student risks losing access to high-demand programs in their acceptance billet.
4. Why We Use This System
SASI receives far more qualified applicants than we can accommodate in our internship programs.
Many students match to our selective programs. If we held seats without payment, we would unintentionally block other students who are ready to commit.
This approach:
- keeps the process fair
- avoids holding seats that never get used
- gives all qualified applicants the clearest path to a place in the program
5. Integrated Programs (Dual PRIME, Dual Pathway, Dual Flex)
Certain SASI offerings, including Dual PRIME, Dual Pathway, and Dual Flex, are designed as Integrated Programs, representing our most comprehensive and academically demanding summer experiences. These pathways combine multiple curricular elements into a unified sequence that offers sustained clinical immersion, close faculty engagement, and advanced skill development.
Faculty Selection for Integrated Programs
Students matched to an Integrated Program have been evaluated by Stanford faculty as prepared to benefit from and contribute meaningfully to the depth and pace of this advanced curriculum. Selection reflects both demonstrated potential and faculty confidence in the student’s readiness for a rigorous, cohesive experience.
Enrollment Commitment
Enrollment in an Integrated Program reserves a place in the entire educational sequence. Because the curriculum is intentionally designed as a unified progression, participation is confirmed for the full program. Seats are allocated based on this complete commitment.
Changes After Enrollment
Integrated Programs are not structured for partial participation. Individual components cannot be added or removed once enrollment is completed. Students unable to commit to the full program may withdraw according to SASI’s standard withdrawal and refund policies.
Availability After Withdrawal
Students who withdraw from an Integrated Program may enroll in another SASI program only if that program is already included in their acceptance billet and still has availability.
We cannot add or take away programs to a billet after admission, reopen filled seats, or offer enrollment in programs for which a student was not originally matched. This preserves fairness across all applicants and protects limited capacity in high-demand offerings.
Rationale
This approach preserves the integrity and rigor of our most selective offerings, protects limited capacity, and ensures that every admitted student receives the full, faculty-designed experience. It also maintains fairness for all applicants who aspire to join these advanced pathways.
6. Guidance for Families
If a particular program is your priority, we strongly encourage applying in Early Decision rounds and completing payment promptly after receiving your acceptance billet. Capacity changes quickly, especially in our high demand internship programs.
Your acceptance billet represents every program you are eligible to join. Your final placement depends on seat availability at the time you register.
