Uniting us in the global fight for maternal and newborn health, this symposium brings together leaders in academia, philanthropy, and technology to better understand how community activism and cost-effective innovation can improve healthcare access in India and other nations in the developing world.

1:10 – 1:30 pm                    A Conversation with Madhuri Dixit and Dr. Ram Nene

This famous couple – a Bollywood actress and a cardiovascular surgeon – will open the conference with a conversation about the challenges that women and children currently face in India.  Moderator: Priya Singh                                                

1:30 – 1:45 pm                    Maternal and Newborn Survival Initiative (MANSI)

AIF President and CEO Alex Counts will discuss the achievements, learnings, and implications of AIF’s signature health program MANSI, a public-private partnership that has reduced child mortality in 167 tribal villages by more than 40 percent.                                        

1:45 – 2:10 pm                    The Sahiya – A Day in the Life

Charu Johari, a MANSI representative and Mamta Mahato, a community educator (Sahiya) will speak about their experiences, successes and challenges.   Moderator: Vinny Bhutani               

2:10 – 3:10 pm                    Design Thinking, Medicine and Global Health

In his research on the emotional brain and how it shapes decisions and experiences, Stanford GSB professor Baba Shiv has identified the processes that make innovation possible. In this session, he’ll present the principles behind design thinking and introduce the audience to entrepreneurs who have drawn on these methods and applied them successfully to their complex challenges.  Entrepreneurs: Krista Donaldson (D-Rev), Pushkar Ingale (Laerdal Global Health), Piya Sorcar (TeachAIDS), Robert Stebbins (SecureScan) and Josh Nesbit (Medic Mobile)

School of Medicine faculty will showcase the latest research in maternal and child health. Faculty: Gary Darmstadt, Jennifer Newberry, Dennis Wall

4:00 – 4:15 pm                    Stanford Medicine’s Innovation in Global Health

Dean Lloyd B. Minor, dean of the Stanford School of Medicine will speak about Stanford’s current and future  plans to not only treat women and children around the world who are sick but keep them from getting sick in the first place.                                                    

4:15 – 4:35 pm                    Inkblots, Geography and Destiny

Physician-author and Stanford Medicine professor Abraham Verghese will reflect on the nature of change, on slow and fast knowledge and on the importance of identifying critical rituals.

4:35 – 5:00 pm                    MedTech Award Presentation
