Works in Progress Collaboratory
Lunchtime Collaboration for Health Professionals
The TMA is excited to announce the Works in Progress Collaboratory will resume in Fall 2025
Once a month from 12:00pm - 1:00pm via Zoom
GOAL
The goal of these workshops is to create an engaged educational research and innovation community that develops capacity for health professions education (HPE) scholarship. The workshops serve as an open forum for emerging scholars in health professions’ education to connect with and receive input from experienced scholars.
OBJECTIVES
By the end of each workshop,
- The presenter will report having received valuable feedback that advances their health professions education project.
- Participants will report an increased sense of belonging in an inclusive community of educational scholars.
FORMAT
Once a month, two individuals will present their education work during a one-hour, virtual session. Presenters will receive feedback from experienced scholars as well as others in attendance. During the session presenters may ask for help with activities like:
- Brainstorming an Idea for an HPE project
- Planning Project Implementation
- Planning an Evaluation of a Project
- Reviewing an Abstract or Writing for Publication
- Practicing a Presentation
Everyone is welcome to participate as attendees. We hope that this will become a fun, supportive community and anticipate that regular participants will make connections, learn from the discussion, and begin to contribute to the conversation.
ROLES
PRESENTERS provide a brief description of their project and a set of questions that they would like input on during the discussion. Presenters may wish to share a document or slides that provide participants with enough detail to offer targeted feedback, advice about relevant frameworks or theories, possible references, and suggestions for improvement.
EXPERIENCED SCHOLARS can ask clarifying questions and provide input after hearing from the presenter.
ATTENDEES are invited and encouraged to ask questions and provide input after experienced scholars share initial thoughts.

Session Dates
March 12, 2025
12:00pm - 1:00pm via Zoom
Kameron Black, DO, MPH, aims to create a scalable framework for informatics training via an interactive, virtual seminar curriculum with discussion sections aligned with AAMC core competencies. The methodology includes a needs assessment using focus groups with clinical informatics physicians, CI fellows, and leaders in digital health-related UME and pre- and post-session quizzes to evaluate the seminar’s effectiveness. The project is currently in the needs assessment data analysis phase, the findings of which will guide curriculum development.
Dr. Black is looking forward to hearing input from experienced scholars on:
Refining the curriculum design
Identifying potential gaps
Ensuring alignment with educational standards and future healthcare needs
February 12, 2025
12:00pm - 1:00pm via Zoom
Dr. Flora Ma, our next presenter, will be talking about her project on “Empathy Communication Training with real-time Large Language Model” aiming to transform education with an innovative technology approach. Dr. Ma’s project enables clinicians to practice patient communication through Zoom calls with AI patients. Enhanced patient communication (especially factoring in cultural humility and competency etc.) can lead to a range of positive outcomes including stronger rapport, increase treatment adherence, and lower malpractice lawsuits. This feasibility project builds off of national research Dr. Ma conducted in 2024 and will hopefully enable any patient facing providers and trainees to practice challenging scenarios of patient interactions on demand, bridging the existing training gaps in medical education today.
Dr. Ma is seeking feedback from users on ways to improve this education tool, and how this solution can have the greatest impact (e.g., early-career doctors, nurses, and crisis hotline staff).
January 8, 2025
12:00pm - 1:00pm via Zoom
Gloria Ye, our first presenter, will be talking about their project “Bridging Divisions: Assessing Cohort-Based Peer Mentorship for Early-Career Faculty in Academic Medicine.”
Gloria Ye’s project evaluates a cohort-based peer mentorship program designed to support professional development and wellness among early-career faculty in academic medicine. The study assesses the feasibility and effectiveness of the program by analyzing survey data from mentors and mentees collected at multiple time points. Gloria seeks feedback on refining data analysis techniques, interpreting results to inform actionable insights, and guidance on writing their first paper for publication to share findings more broadly as well as target journals to consider.
