ARISE to Receive Feedback
Feedback is a critical learning tool in medical education, and we talk a lot about how to approach giving feedback so that the conversation is productive and meaningful. However, sometimes it is not the giving but receiving of feedback that can make the conversation go astray. While well-received feedback effectively enhances the teacher-learner relationship, helps the learner get the most out of the feedback provided, and, ultimately, improves patient care, poorly-received feedback can lead to feelings of stress and embarrassment, and is counter-productive to a positive learning encounter. As part of the TMA’s on-going efforts to support a culture of feedback across the School of Medicine, this interactive workshop will focus on the art of receiving feedback, using the TMA’s ARISE model to support participants in understanding how they can manage their own responses to feedback and make best use of the feedback they receive for personal growth.
Learning Objectives:
By the end of this session, participants will be able to:
- Identify three types of feedback
- Summarize three triggers that may set off emotion during a feedback conversation
- Describe the ARISE model for effectively receiving feedback
- Apply strategies to effectively receive feedback.
