Oscar Salvatierra Award Recipients
The Oscar Salvatierra Award for Exceptional Service to Stanford Medical Students and the School of Medicine recognizes decades of service to the Stanford School of Medicine community. It cannot begin to capture each awardee’s selfless dedication to the Stanford School of Medicine, to the scores of students they have influenced, and to medical education broadly. Because of these contributions, we are sure the impact of each of your contributions will be felt for years to come.
NEIL GESUNDHEIT, MD, MPH
Dr. Neil Gesundheit completed medical school at UCSF, a joint MPH degree at UC Berkeley, and trained in internal medicine at Stanford. He was a research associate and senior staff fellow at the NIH for nearly 6 years, conducting endocrine basic and clinical research. He then served as a research director and translational scientist at Genentech and at a start-up company. He returned to Stanford in 1999 to join the faculty and Dean’s Office, first serving as associate dean for medical education (1999-2006), then as associate dean for academic advising (2006-2017), and finally as senior associate dean for medical education (2017-2024). He is currently the George DeForest Barnett III Professor of Medicine. A committed educator, Dr. Gesundheit has taught in the Science of Medicine (endocrine module director from 1999-present) and Practice of Medicine courses. He is the recipient of numerous teaching and service awards and was a friend, co-worker, and proud disciple of Dr. Salvatierra.
Lars Osterberg, MD, MPH
Lars Osterberg, MD, MPH, is Professor (Teaching) of Medicine at Stanford School of Medicine, Faculty Co-Director of Stanford Medicine Teaching and Mentoring Academy, and the inaugural director of the Educators-4-CARE program at Stanford University School of Medicine, a learning community of Stanford Medical School that provides a structured mentoring program to support the professional identity formation of all medical students at Stanford. He is a recognized leader in medical education. He has been invited to present on medical education topics at national conferences and invited to teach bedside medicine or provide faculty development nationally and internationally on topics of medical education. His research interests are in areas of medical education, healthcare access and healthcare delivery for vulnerable populations, and patient adherence to medications. In his clinical settings, undergraduates, medical students, and house staff are enriched by his lessons in social justice and compassionate, respectful medicine.
Walt Newman Award for Exceptional Community Service—MD Program
This award recognizes an individual who exemplifies the values and accomplishments of Dr. Walt Newman's work and life: a selfless commitment to service to patients and the community, and to modeling that ethic for the medical students he mentored. His work in community service - particularly in founding and supervising the student-led Flu Crew vaccine program - left a profoundly positive legacy at Stanford Medicine.

and Active Involvement in Medical Student Education—MD Program
The Lawrence H. Mathers Award is given for excellence in teaching and active involvement in medical student education. The award was established in honor of Lawrence H. Mathers, who contributed to the Stanford community as a student and faculty member from 1966 to 2002 and served for many years as the Chief of Human Anatomy. The award recognizes an individual who exemplifies the values and accomplishments of Dr. Mathers’ work and life: always available or makes extra time to address student concerns and needs; arranges unique clinical experiences or practice; responds to student interests by initiating academic courses or extracurricular activities to meet unmet student needs.

Augustus A. White III and Family Faculty Award—OFDE
Dr. Augustus A. White III was the first African American graduate of Stanford Medical School in 1961 and the first African American Chair of the Department Orthopaedic Surgery at Harvard Medical School. Dr. White is passionate about eliminating health disparities and believes in the importance of students, trainees, and faculty in achieving this goal. In 2011, his Stanford medical school graduating class worked to develop the Dr. Augustus A. White III and Family Faculty award, which serves to recognize faculty leadership through research, education, mentoring, or service that affects health equity directly or through activities that support early career faculty, students, or trainees.
