PowerPoint: Targeting African Americans: The Menthol Plan
Instructions
Educators should download the PowerPoint file which contains Teacher Talking Points for each slide.
Purpose
1. This activity provides a script that teachers can use to initiate discussions about the history of how menthol cigarettes have targeted African Americans, while discussing how this is a social justice issue. Embedded within the scripted discussion are various ads that could be shown to further make the points.

Procedure
This PowerPoint provides an overview of what students should know about the impact of menthol cigarettes on the African American community, including how tobacco companies target African Americans, marketing tactics being used, what we know about the properties of menthol. At the end of the PowerPoint are some debriefing activities that you can use with the students.
