Scholarships

For current residents:

Li Ka-Shing Scholarship

Business man, entrepreneur, and philanthropist Sir Li Ka-Shing has been a long-time supporter of higher education and medicine, donating to numerous universities since the 1980s. In 2016, he became particularly interested in the work of Department Chair Dr. Mary Hawn and the Li Ka Shing Scholarship was born. This award funds a Department of Surgery resident for two years during their professional development time, allowing the resident to concentrate on research and/or pursue a masters degree.

Dr. Ananya Anand

Ananya Anand was awarded a Li Ka Shing Surgeon Scholar Award to pursue her Masters degree in Health Professions Education at the University of Illinois Chicago. She has since completed the first of her two years in the program and has had the tremendous opportunity to complete coursework in a number of areas including scholarship, leadership, innovative assessment methods, reflective practice, and statistics. Her Masters program has given her tremendous insight into the field of health professions education and has served as a catalyst for numerous projects and presentations. This year, Ananya has first-authored 3 peer-reviewed manuscripts, co-authored 4 manuscripts, given 5 presentations at local and national meetings, and received an Association for Surgical Education (ASE) Recognition of Excellence Award for her contributions to the field of surgical education. She looks forward to completing her degree in this upcoming academic year and is grateful for the incredible support provided by the Li Ka Shing Surgeon Scholar Award.
