2008 Fall Forum on Community Health & Public Service

Although the United States represents 5 percent of the world's total population, it accounts for almost 25 percent of the world's prison population. California's prison system alone holds 170,000 inmates at any given time, said Lisa Pratt, MD, MPH, chief physician at San Quentin State Prison and keynote speaker at this year's Fall Forum.

Discussing her early efforts in community medicine and current work at San Quentin, Pratt linked public health issues, such as addiction and mental illness, to the state's incarceration rates and gave an overview of the challenges faced by the state's prison system today.

Sponsored by the school's Office of Community Health, the forum is an annual showcase for service projects by medical students, undergraduates and physician-assistant students in underserved communities at home and around the world.
