Get the Lead Out: Autoclave Tape Exchange in SOM

The Health and Safety Programs Office and Compliance Assistance Program (CAP) team members invite School of Medicine laboratories to exchange lead-containing rolls of autoclave tape for a non-lead containing alternative.

"Get the LEAD Out" is a 1-for-1 exchange; bring a lead-containing roll to M023 (Club Med in the Alway Basement) and receive a non-lead containing roll, provided by VWR, at one of the following times:

• Thur: 2/19, 9-11
• Fri: 2/20, 11-1
• Tue: 2/24, 1-3

This is a limited exchange program; in the future non-lead containing autoclave tape can be purchased. Additional details are available on the Health and Safety Programs Website.

Update on Training Requirements

The School's first quarter 2008 self-inspection special topic will focus on reviewing lab safety training requirements and related special training topics.

As you know, keeping abreast of training requirements for laboratory workers is a critical safety and compliance issue. On or before March 1, 2008 the School will distribute the first quarter 2008 self inspection checklist and the special topic for the quarter will be a review and check of required training for laboratory workers. Although you and your colleagues may be familiar with and up-to-date on the basic chemical, biological, and radiological training requirements, we will also be focusing on some of the more specialized requirements such as shipping with dry ice, hazardous materials shipping in general, laser safety training, and specialized equipment and procedure training.

The new emergency binders and database are now ready!
Department / Division Emergency Coordinators are invited to attend any of our 1-hour training sessions to learn how to transfer information from your current plans and gain training on the new web interface.

The School of Medicine's Emergency Satellite Operations Center (SOC) is now located in MSOB X-169.
