Health & Safety Programs

February 2008

Quarter 1 2008 Self-Inspection:
Verify & Update Training Records

This quarter's self-inspection special topic focus is reviewing lab safety training requirements and related special training. As you know, keeping abreast of training requirements for laboratory workers is a critical safety and compliance issue.

The special topic for the quarter is a review and check of required training for laboratory workers.

Although you and your colleagues may be familiar with and up-to-date on the basic chemical, biological, and radiological training requirements, please also focus on some of the more specialized requirements such as shipping with dry ice, hazardous materials shipping in general, laser safety training, and specialized equipment and procedure training.

Chemical Inventory Update:
Fairchild & RAF

Updates for the Fairchild Science Building (07-520) and RAF Facility are due at the beginning of March.

Stanford policy requires labs to:
- add chemicals that are not currently in the inventory system
- delete items that are no longer in the lab and no longer in use
- adjust quantities of inventory items if ongoing changes have been made
- include all compressed gas cylinders and bleach (both often overlooked)

All chemical inventories need to be updated ONLINE using Chemtracker v1. Upon request, EH&S can provide current inventory summaries for your overall review. Contact Shelly Navarro (shellyn@stanford.edu) for printouts, questions on accessing the system or for a username/password.

The Chemical Inventory Update is an annual process where labs review and update information in the ChemTracker database; the University uses this information as part of the Hazardous Materials Management Plan (HMMP) submitted to regulatory and response agencies.

Update on Training Requirements

The School's first quarter 2008 self-inspection special topic will focus on reviewing lab safety training requirements and related special training topics.

As you know, keeping abreast of training requirements for laboratory workers is a critical safety and compliance issue. On or before March 1, 2008 the School will distribute the first quarter 2008 self inspection checklist and the special topic for the quarter will be a review and check of required training for laboratory workers. Although you and your colleagues may be familiar with and up-to-date on the basic chemical, biological, and radiological training requirements, we will also be focusing on some of the more specialized requirements such as shipping with dry ice, hazardous materials shipping in general, laser safety training, and specialized equipment and procedure training.
