Self-Inspection Topic for Quarter 3, 2006
General Safety Review and Updates
The quarterly topic for Quarter 3, 2006 is General Safety Review and Updates. For this quarter, ALL work areas in the School of Medicine will use the General Workplace Self-Inspection Form; this includes offices, labs, shops and shared/common areas. Support documents for Health and Safety at Stanford and the School of Medicine, Preventing Injury and Illness in the Workplace and Laboratory Safety-Related Topics are available online.
General Safety Review
The acronym for the key elements of Stanford's Injury and Illness Prevention Program is TRICK for training, reporting, identifying, correcting, and keeping records. Review the requirements for each basic safety topic.
- Training - University, department, supervisors, manager and Principal Investigators (PI) train employees and students on the correct safety practices for the work they will be doing.
- Reporting accidents, incidents and unsafe conditions to your supervisor.
- Identifying hazards or unsafe conditions in the workplace before an accident or incident occurs.
- Correcting identified hazards in a timely manner.
- Keeping records of training, inspections, incidents and corrections.
General Safety Updates
This year, the School of Medicine's Health and Safety Programs office has a new look with an updated website following the Medical School format. Bookmark the site in your favorite browser and check the Message Board for health and safety-related announcements and updates. Some new topics and timely information for members of the medical school community:
- Heat Wave Guidelines - We still have another month of summer weather and the July heat wave is still fresh in our minds; the guidelines includes what to do during a heat wave and how to prepare your area for the next wave.
- Summer Lab Attire - Safe lab attire includes the use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Reusable Sharps Container Program - The Sharpsmart containers introduced initially as a pilot program, virtually eliminates disposal-related sharps injuries and post-disposal spills. Departments no longer need to purchase containers. Tons of plastic currently disposed in landfills or incinerated are no longer generated.
