Self-Inspection Topic for Quarter 1, 2007
Fire Safety
The Lab and Shop Inspection form has questions on general safety, hazardous materials and waste, and a quarterly topic. For Quarter 1, 2007, the topic is Fire Safety.
The questions are a review of items covered in General Safety and Chemical Safety modules from the online safety training. Excerpts from SafetyTrain are available as a reference for this quarter's topic.
- EMERGENCY RESPONSE - What to do in case of a fire or other emergency, information to assist response personnel and building evacuation process
- FIRE PROTECTION - Check access to fire protection devices in labs and throughout the building.
- FIRE PREVENTION - How can I prevent a fire from occurring in my
work area.
Some of the items in the topic module are violations cited during inspections. The three most common Fire Code violations in the School of Medicine:
- IMPROPER SURGE PROTECTOR and/or EXTENSION CORD USE
- Surge protectors in series: Each surge protector is to be plugged into an outlet and not "daisy-chained" (surge protector plugged into another surge protector causes overloading, overheating and can create a shock or fire hazard.)
- Extension cord use in lieu of permanent wiring and outlet: Extension cords are for temporary use only and not designed to perform as a permanent wiring solution. - SEISMIC RESTRAINTS
- Secure equipment and other items from falling or moving into exit paths
- Check ALL equipment or storage units over 400 pounds or more than four feet in height. Restraint mechanisms on freezers, refrigerators, incubators or cabinets may have been detached or loosened during preventative maintenance, service or for other reasons. - CHEMICAL INVENTORY (Life Safety Box) and CHEMICAL STORAGE
- These are the same items covered during Hazardous Materials and Waste inspections and annual Chemical Inventory Updates; they are also included in the Fire Code!
