Is there a systematic mechanism for distributing health and safety related information and updates to lab members?
- Identify a "safety captain" or have a contact or two designated by each PI act as liason with the department contact responsible for health and safety.
- The "safety captain" can also help answer questions during inspections.
Is the lab familiar with health and safety-related resources such as the CAP team members for their building and online resources?
- There is a Compliance Assistance Program (CAP) Team member assigned by University's Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) to assist labs with their compliance questions.
Are Health and Safety resource websites bookmarked on lab computers?

Are regulatory agency inspection results and self-inspections findings and corrections routinely shared during lab meetings?
- One effective method used by departments is including health and safety as part of their regular lab meetings. Another option is scheduling monthly, quarterly, or semi-annual meetings with lab contacts.
- Use the "Comments & Additional Findings" area to document follow-up on corrections for violations noted during regulatory inspections.
Are lab members aware of how to report a chemical spill?
- See the Accident Response section of the Laboratory Chemical Waste Guidelines posted in laboratory.
- Call 286, evacuate area, notify supervisor. For small spills (<50 ml, low hazard) follow the clean-up procedures.
Are lab members familiar with how to report incidents or accidents?
- Report all incidents and accidents to your supervisor.
