Compliance and Inspections in the School of Medicine
Health and Safety Programs (HSP) assists researchers in the School of Medicine create a safe, compliant working environment and prepare for inspections conducted by regulatory agencies.
- Inspections
Conducted by Regulatory Agencies include fire
safety, handling, storage and disposal of hazardous materials and/or
waste, medical
waste management, wastewater
discharge related to research activities. Guidelines are
available to help prepare for inspections. Agencies schedule most
inspections in advance.

Self-Inspections - Each department or division in the School of Medicine is required to self-inspect work areas, document the results, make necessary corrections, and maintain records for completing the process.

- A General
Workplace Self-Inspection is conducted in ALL work areas at
least ONCE PER YEAR to evaluate fire and electrical safety, office ergonomics
and general safety hazards in the workplace. Each department or division
in the School of Medicine is required to self-inspect work areas, document
the results, make necessary corrections, and maintain records for completing
the process.

- Lab & Shop
Self-Inspection is a quarterly walk-through conducted
by a department member with the objective of identifying any unsafe
conditions in laboratories/shops that are using or storing hazardous
materials or waste.

- Guidance for Responding to Unannounced Regulatory Inspections of Your Facility Guidance document on what to do if inspectors from any local, state, or federal governmental agency appear in your department offices or laboratories and ask to conduct an inspection or review documents.
