The University Environmental Health and Safety Department has established an Injury and Illness Prevention Program that holds Schools, Departments, supervisor’s and each of us as employees and community members responsible for it’s active implementation. Each of the program areas outlined in other parts of the website are designed to support this central goal.
- Preventing
Workplace Injury& Illness - One way to remember those responsibilities
is by knowing the TRICK to
a good safety program.

- Training -
Health and Safety training is organized into three tiers ranging from
very general information to more specific training offered by Schools,
departments, supervisors, managers and Principal Investigators (PI).
The objective is to train employees and students on the correct safety
practices for the work they will be doing.

- Fire
Safety includes fire alarms, extinguishers, sprinklers,
and maintaining egressways free of obstructions.

- Earthquake Safety Check back here a little later for information on earthquake safety and seismic bracing.
- Electrical
Safety includes ensuring that electrical cords are
in good condition, proper use of extension cords and that mechanical
safeguards for equipment and machinery are in proper working order,
and personal protective equipment is available.

- General
Workplace Self-Inspection The University
has developed a Checklist as
part of the Injury and Illness Prevention Program (IIPP) to assist
in identifying and when necessary, correcting general safety hazards.
This form is used at ONCE PER YEAR to identify unsafe conditions
in the workplace.

- Ergonomics includes
safe lifting, computer use, and laboratory ergonomics.

- Quarterly Topics are presented each quarter with a focus on a special area of health and safety. The special topic for Quarter 1, 2009 is, "Emergency Notification for Laboratories"; Quarter 2, 2009 is, "Health and Safety Verification for Laboratories."
