Health & Safety at SMP
Health & Safety issues at SMP are similar to those on campus. We will be creating an Emergency Plan specifically for the site, evaluating life safety issues, and attending to ergonomics, security, support, and other issues. We will be addressing the concerns on the list below and any others that arise.
Off Campus Location Checklist
Life Safety:
- Appropriate/adequate exit signage and egress routes
- Fire Alarm system
- Meets code
- Who monitors, tests, and resets
- Fire extinguishers
- Appropriate for work area / activities
- Who manages inspection and recharge
- Building evacuation maps in place
- Designation of emergency assembly points (EAPs) and post installation
Emergency Preparedness:
- New employee orientation checklist (include personal kits)
- Identify emergency number for building (911)
- Identify, organize and train Building Response Teams
- Create and maintain building occupant roster
- Purchase a building “first aid” kit
- Determine location of utility shut-offs and who has the ability to shut-off
- Create list of water sources in the facility – if no bottled water then purchase emergency water supplies
- Ensure equipment is seismically braced, EQ lips on shelves, etc.
- Who inspects exterior after an earthquake? (ie who approves re-entry?)
- Who repairs EQ damages and what timelines are realistic for repairs?
- Work with SoM EH&S on communication methods & equipment
- Each department at the off-site location needs to have a communication plan with their on-campus department colleagues and/or the SoM SOC (this could be a combined building communication plan for small sites)
Other issues to consider:
- Security of facility
- Access restrictions
- Med Center security coverage
- Identify local fire and law enforcement office locations
- Emergency power status
- Generator in place?
- Automatic or manual switching?
- What does it cover?
- Who maintains and refuels generator?
- Emergency power outlets identified?
- Engineering and Maintenance support
- Who provides under normal circumstances?
- Who provides in an emergency circumstance?
- Contact information available?
- Housekeeping support
- Who provides under normal circumstances?
- Who provides in an emergency circumstance?
- Contact information available?
- Building manager / landlord contact
- Ergonomics
- Selecting approved furniture
- Ergonomic evaluations
- Inspections
- Self Inspections (annual for offices)
- Dealing with unannounced regulatory inspections
- Inspection finding correction
- IRT Issues
- Servers and data back-up
- Phone system stability
- Network connection stability
- Bicycle Safety for “community” bikes
