Pediatrician Hayley Gans at Palo Alto Medical Foundation examines measles study participant Eric Tupua with the help of his mother, Janet. Gans and colleagues reported in the Aug. 12 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association that infants' immune systems are too immature to manufacture antibodies. This lack of immunocompetence offers additional evidence - beyond interference from maternal antibodies - about why vaccines are ineffective in the youngest patients.
