VOLUME 25 NO. 10 NOVEMBER 2001
Medical Staff Meeting
- Most of the 162 physicians attending the Nov. 1 Stanford Hospital & Clinics medical staff meeting took time to socialize and converse with their colleagues. The meeting, held in Packard Auditorium, was the first chaired by President Ray Gaeta, a faculty pain management specialist, shown above with attending psychologist Diana Adams. The meeting offered an opportunity for physicians to hear presentations and ask questions about current issues facing the hospital, such as finances, bioterrorism and relationships with the medical school. Above, ophthalmologists Christopher Ta, left, and Suldev Singh kept on their white coats for the late afternoon event.

Medical board election ballots sent to active staff
Two physicians are competing for vice president/president-elect of the medical staff, while six candidates are vying for three at-large positions on the Stanford Hospital & Clinics Medical Board.

Ballots were sent to the 1,300 active and provisional members of the medical staff in mid-November to elect a vice president who will become staff president in two years. Candidates are Bruce Adornato, a clinical professor and Palo Alto-based neurologist; and Christopher Zarins, chief of the division of vascular surgery. Preaddressed return envelopes were expected to be sent back by Nov. 21.

For the at-large positions, ballots were mailed in mid-October for return by Nov. 7. The at-large members would serve a term through Aug. 31, 2003.

At-large candidates, in the order they are listed on the ballot, are Laura Nicholson, a faculty member in general internal medicine; Richard Novak, an anesthesiologist with Associated Anesthesiologists Medical Group; Stuart Schlisserman, a Palo Alto-based internal medicine specialist; David Shields, a Welch Road-based gastroenterologist; Carlos Esquivel, chief of the Division of Transplantation; and John Barry, a faculty psychiatrist. The three at-large members supplement ex officio members of the medical board, predominantly department chairs and/or clinical chiefs of service.
