At a memorial service April 23 at the Stanford Faculty Club, Chief of Staff Larry Shuer presents a resolution honoring former Chief of Staff James L. McGuire to his wife, Linda, while other members of his family observe. About 400 colleagues, friends, students and other guests attended the service for McGuire, who died of a heart attack at age 48 on March 15 in New England, where he had moved in 1995 to head a Harvard-affiliated physician system. Among those remembering the Stanford leader for his concern for others, was his teen-age son, John, far left, who told how his dad flashed two "thumbs up" to show optimism just before dying. Former mentor and colleague, Edward D. Harris, the George DeForest Barnett Professor in Medicine, and McGuireÕs first rheumatology fellow, Elaine Lambert, who now practices at Sports Orthopaedic and Rehabilitation Associates, helped organize the event. Three memorial funds have been established: a summer student internship, an annual lecture (contact medical development at 415-723-8296), and a Stanford menÕs Lacrosse Team Fund (contact Eileen Gall, Stanford Athletics 415-725-4517). |
