MARY SANDERS, a staff psychologist in the Division of Child Psychiatry, completed a study which showed that half of 62 local children surveyed recently in grades three through six wanted to look thinner. The study, published in the January issue of the International Journal of Eating Disorders, disclosed that the family was the most common source of information on dieting, leading to the conclusion that well-informed parents can have a major role in helping their children maintain positive nutrition habits. Therefore, parents need to make sure children understand that the need to diet among adults may or may not be relevant to them, says Sanders, who collaborated on the study with Hans Steiner, professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences, and Ellen A. Schur, a medical student. |
