Holmes from Penn named to SHS, school posts
Edward Holmes Edward Holmes of the University of Pennsylvania has agreed to take on three new leadership posts at the medical center effective July 1, Eugene A. Bauer, dean of the School of Medicine, announced last month.

Bauer said he expects Holmes to assume duties as vice president for translational medicine and clinical research for SHS, senior associate dean for research, and director of clinical molecular medicine.

Holmes is currently the Frank Wister Thomas Professor and chair of the Department of Medicine, as well as a professor of human genetics at Penn. His new Stanford appointment will include a faculty position in the Department of Medicine.

"It is likely that only one person at the medical school is more pleased than I am by the fact that Ed Holmes will be coming to Stanford," Bauer added, referring to the fact that Holmes is married to Judith Swain, chair of the Department of Medicine.

As SHS vice president for translational medicine and clinical research, Holmes will be responsible both for the development and implementation of the medical centerÍs translational research strategy and for the centerÍs relationships with industry. This will include developing initiatives for university/SHS and industry collaborations and for technology transfer.

As senior associate dean for research and director of clinical molecular medicine, Holmes will be responsible for developing the medical schoolÍs research goals and a strategy for fulfilling them.

The new Program in Clinical Molecular Medicine „ to be housed in the soon-to-be-built Center for Clinical Sciences Research (CCSR) „ will parallel the Program in Molecular and Genetic Medicine, directed by Paul Berg and based at the Beckman Center.

Another part of HolmesÍ job will be to develop a program in translational medicine and experimental therapeutics.

A native of Winona, Miss., Holmes earned his MD from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, where he has served as chair of medicine for the past six years.
