Farquhar, Fortmann

Effective Jan. 1, Stephen Fortmann, right, will become director of the Stanford Center for Research in Disease Prevention, succeeding John W. Farquhar, who founded the SCRDP as the Stanford Heart Disease Prevention Program in 1971. Farquhar, left, the C.F. Rehnborg Professor of Disease Preventio, will remain with the SCRDP in a variety of roles, including as director of a proposed Wellness Center. Fortmann, an associate professor of medicine who has been deputy director of SCRDP since 1988, said he hopes to continue the center's diversity of programs. TheSCRDP operates several clinical programs including the Health Improvement Program (HIP), which offers a variety of classes and evaluations that are often covered for patients under health plans.
