PRK A clinical trial of a laser system that may become the first tool to permanently correct
farsightedness has begun at the Department of Ophthalmology's Stanford Laser Vision Center
under the leadership of principal investigator Edward F. Manche, assistant professor of
ophthalmology and director of refractive surgery for SHS. The investigational laser procedure,
called hyperopic PRK (photo-refractive keratectomy), creates a steeper central cornea to
improve vision.
AUTOIMMUNE By forcing misbehaving cells to carry the blueprint for a gene that squelches
autoimmune disease, investigators using mice models have demonstrated a potential alternative
to delivering immunosuppresive drugs to the entire body. Michael Shaw, a postdoctoral fellow,
and his mentor, Gary Fathman, professor of medicine (immunology and rheumatology),
published the results of their research on a disease modeling human multiple sclerosis in the
May issue of the Journal of Experimental Medicine. |
