| Physicians Re-elect Two Incumbents to Medical Board |
|
| Nancy Adelman, a Menlo Medical Clinic pediatrician, and Susan
Sorensen, a hematologist who practices in Palo Alto, have been reelected to at-large
positions on the Stanford Hospital and Clinics Medical Board.
This is the second consecutive term for both Adelman and Sorensen, whose new terms run through August 2000. Other candidates in the mail-in election were Donald Goffinet, professor of radiation oncology; Christopher Hayward, associate professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences; and Leslie Zatz, emeritus professor of radiology. Some 321 of the eligible medical staff members participated in the postal balloting. A total of five members of the 36-member medical board are elected at-large for two-year terms. The at-large members complete the bylaws-mandated membership, which consists of clinical chiefs, medical staff officers, deputy chiefs, and select physician leaders. Two bylaw changes were also approved in the mail-in balloting. One measure adds the existing steering committee for the Clinical Cancer Center to the list of medical staff committees. This action is intended to meet American College of Surgeons' requirements that a "multidisciplinary Cancer Committee [be] designated as a standing committee in the bylaws of the participating institution." A second bylaw change expands the scope of the existing Well Being of Physicians and Physicians-in-Training Committee to include Packard Children's Hospital physicians. The committee provides a forum and resources to help impaired physicians or house staff deal with such issues as mental illness, alcohol/drug abuse or age-related impairments. The bylaw change provides committee representation from Packard, as well as committee support to that institution's physicians. |
