Gregory retires, duties split between COS, associate dean

The title of chief medical officer will retire with Peter Gregory when he leaves that post Aug. 31.

Dean Philip A. Pizzo announced that he and Medical Center Vice President Eugene Bauer have decided to eliminate the role of chief medical officer at Stanford Hospital and Clinics and distribute the related functions to the chief of staff, currently Larry Shuer, and to the senior associate dean for clinical affairs - a decanal post that Gregory also held.

Meanwhile, Pizzo announced that Norman Rizk, medical director of the intensive care units and professor of medicine (pulmonary and critical care), will become the senior associate dean for clinical affairs. Rizk will serve in that position part time so that he can continue to fulfill his clinical and other responsibilities - an arrangement that mirrors those of other senior associate deans.

Gregory will retire Aug. 31 from the posts of professor of medicine, chief medical officer and senior associate dean for clinical affairs. [For a retrospective look at Gregory's career and influence, see Chief of Staff Larry Shuer's column]

The CMO has been responsible for a variety of functions, including serving on institutionwide boards and providing leadership for a variety of administrative and health care issues, including malpractice oversight, quality improvement and capital budget. Some functions were already shared with the chief of staff and/or the president of the medical staff. "I am deeply appreciative for the many contributions that Dr. Peter Gregory has provided and continues to offer. I am also enormously pleased that Dr. Rizk will be assuming this very important role [as senior associate dean] and I look forward to working with him in the years ahead," Pizzo said in his July 23 announcement.
