At-large and deputy chief memberships
filled by election to Medical Board

Medical Board election results were completed Sept. 20 pending approval by the board of a fourth board slot to accommodate a two-way tie among candidates vying for three open slots.

Meanwhile, election of deputy chiefs was also completed and announced on Sept. 20.

The winning candidates in a seven-person field for the three-year at-large slots were:

James Badger – General Surgery
Christopher Sharp – Internal Medicine
Richard Whyte – Thoracic Surgery
Harvey Young – Gastroenterology (incumbent)

The Medical Board, at its October meeting, approved the fourth at-large position to accommodate tying candidates Badger and Whyte.

Members at-large are elected by and represent the entire medical staff for staggered three-year terms. Continuing at-large members include Myriam Curet, general surgery, and Kelley Skeff, medicine.

Medical Staff President Kent Garman also certified the election of three contested deputy chief positions:

Neurology – Peter Cassini
Orthopedics – John Lannin
Psychiatry – Diana Adams

Eleven uncontested deputy chief positions announced in August included:

Anesthesia – Richard Novak
CV Surgery – Philip Oyer
Dermatology – Mary [Shannon] Sheu
Medicine – Sue Sorensen
Neurosurgery – Paul Jackson
OB/GYN – John Wachtel
Ophthalmology – Judy Nevitt
Otolaryngology – Winston Vaughan
Radiation Oncology – Sarah Donaldson
Surgery – Michael Trollope
Urology – Jeffrey Reese

Garman noted that one department, Diagnostic Radiology, has no deputy chief because no eligible private community physicians were nominated for the position.

Deputy chiefs are elected for each three-year term by voting-eligible private service (non full-time faculty) staff members. Generally, only private community members of a given service elect a deputy chief, who is expected to attend regular monthly meetings of the Medical Board. (Faculty service chiefs can appoint a deputy chief in those services with no eligible community Medical Staff members.)

In the current election cycle, at-large Medical Board member Sue Sorensen resigned to accept an uncontested slot as deputy chief of medicine.
