Better cell phone service promised for hospital users

SHC plans to install a distributed antenna system to provide reliable cell phone and other communication connections throughout the hospital, Chief Operating Officer Daniel A. Ginsburg and Chief of Staff Bryan Bohman announced in an April 28 memo to Medical Staff.

The leaders cautioned implementation will not be immediate. Regulatory and other requirements and the complexity of the project in a hospital setting could delay the start of the work until September with completion expected 12 months thereafter.

The hospital recently authorized creation of the new wireless network promptly after a consultant recommended the approach, the email said.

“The issue of cellular coverage at the Hospital has been a topic of great concern for our medical staff. We’ve heard from many of you about how the lack of reliable cellular communications at the hospital affects you in your daily practices and directly affects our ability to safely care for our patients,” the leaders wrote.

“We had hoped there would be a quicker, simpler, and less expensive solution. However, we are pleased that help is on the way. Your input has been invaluable and as always we appreciate your candor and openness,” the leaders wrote.
