SHC Leadership Changes announced
“SHC has benefited greatly from the contributions of many people over the years.” Marsh said. “Beginning this summer, after years of service to SHC, three key leaders will be stepping out of their current roles, and other leaders will be taking on new responsibilities”

Here are key changes:

Mike Peterson came to SHC in 2001 as interim CEO and stayed on as COO. He was instrumental in the successful financial turnaround of SHC after the de-merger with UCSF. As Interim CEO and then as COO he helped successfully lead SHC through all of its critical changes over the past eight years. “In January 2009, after nearly 40 years in hospital administration, Mike will step down as COO but remain on the SHC administrative team to provide leadership on facilities, disaster planning and other important projects,” Marsh said. During the transition, General Services, Human Resources, Clinical Services, Facilities Planning Design and Construction, and Disaster Planning will continue to report to Peterson.

Jerry Shefren, a Stanford gynecologist, has been part of the SHC medical staff since 1974. In 2003, in addition to practicing medicine at Stanford, Shefren took on the role of SHC Vice President for Ambulatory Services. During his leadership the Cancer Center was opened, the Stanford Medicine Outpatient Center in Redwood City was acquired and renovated for clinical use, and a new funds flow model was developed, Marsh said. At the end of this month [July] Jerry Shefren will step out of his administrative role and return to practicing medicine fulltime. (See more)

Latest bylaws provisions ratified in Medical Staff e-election

Several bylaws revisions adopted by the Medical Executive Committee (MEC) were approved by over 90 percent of Medical Staff members who voted.

Bryan D. Bohman, chief of staff, said in his June MEC report to colleagues that the revisions give the Medical Staff the ability to review Hospital policies and determine whether they should be enforced for Medical Staff members.

Provisions of the new bylaws approved in a June e-election also delineate the expanding responsibilities of the Deputy Chiefs and allow for non-adjunct clinical faculty community medical staff members to stand for Deputy Chief election.

The bylaws changes are the latest, and possibly the last, in a series of measures that have been voted on throughout the year that are intended to augment and adjust for the sweeping bylaw revisions, approved last November, that created an elected Chief of Staff.

Bohman had recommended approval.
