Gerardi appointed as new patient safety program manager

Brenda Fischer, director of quality improvement, has announced the appointment of Debra Gerardi as the patient safety program manager at Stanford Hospital.

In this newly created position, Gerardi's responsibilities will include integrating patient safety interventions and patient care processes; overseeing administration of the Patient Safety Net online incident-reporting system (see story); coordinating activities related to the sentinel-event review process; implementing root-cause-analysis action plans; analyzing the hospital's data and trends regarding patient safety; and monitoring legislation and regulatory requirements related to patient safety.

Gerardi is a practicing critical care nurse with more than 15 years of clinical and administrative experience at academic medical centers. At Stanford, she previously served as the assistant nurse manager on unit E2. An RN with a master's degree in public health/health services administration, Gerardi is also an attorney with expertise in mediation and dispute resolution, and she has served as a trainer in conflict management, negotiation and communication in health care.

She recently provided training to the American Medical Association on ethics and liability concerns related to medical errors, and she is currently developing a program for the National Patient Safety Foundation.
