In a July 12 pre-game ceremony at Pacific Bell Park, Joanne Imperial, associate professor of medicine at Stanford, accepted a $35,000 check from Mark and Lori Gardner's "Step Up to the Plate Foundation" for Stanford's Adult Liver Transplant Patient Care Fund. The foundation provides housing and assistance to adult transplant recipients undergoing treatment at the medical center. The gift was in appreciation for care Lori Gardner received at the medical center, including a life-saving liver transplant in 1998. In addition to the Gardner's grant, the San Francisco Giants' organization donated $10,000 to the Gardner's Foundation, and the Giants Community Fund donated $10,000 to the California Transplant Donor Network. The event, "Give Life ... Be a Donor Day," represents the fifth straight year that the Giants have sponsored organ-donor awareness. The original inspiration for the team's involvement came from John Kerner, professor of pediatrics, who collaborated with the Giants, the donor network and transplant surgeons at Stanford, to raise awareness among baseball fans. |
