June 2009 Volume 33 No.6
SHHH (Silent Hospitals Help Healing) posters and flyers have been placed in several SHC inpatient units to remind employees and visitors to keep their voices down. SHHH is a pilot program developed by hospital managers attending the SHC Leadership Academy last fall after four nursing units had scored poorly for noise on the Picker survey, a national patient-satisfaction instrument that is mailed to patients after discharge. Besides the signs, the pilot, which was still being evaluated in June, included an LED display in the shape of a human ear that lights up in green, yellow or red when noise thresholds are crossed. The program also has initiated maintenance on proverbial squeaky wheels, such as noisy door-closing mechanisms.

Medical Executive Committee
Members sought

Nominations, including self-nominations, are being actively sought for two member-at-large positions on the MEC [Medical Executive Committee]. Chief of Staff Bryan D. Bohman called the opportunity to serve in a Medical Staff-wide office an excellent opportunity to understand and influence the workings of the Medical Center. In addition to the at-large members, MEC membership includes faculty chiefs of service and community deputy chiefs, as well as similar ex officio members and officers. It is chaired by the COS.

The at-large post is open to all faculty and community physicians who are active Medical Staff members. Interested candidates or their nominators should contact Debra Green, director of medical staff services, 650 497-8920, degreen@stanfordmed.org, or Bohman, bbohman@stanfordmed.org.
