Here are some actions the Medical Staff and SHC have taken to serve patients and caregivers so far during the 2009-2010 flu season. Also featured are links to further information that is being continually updated.
The SHC Medical Executive Committee in September mandated that all physician staff members receive both seasonal, and when it becomes available, novel (H1N1) flu vaccines — or face administrative suspension of privileges. For details on the policy, FAQs, and Chief of Staff Bryan Bohman’s explanation of how this requirement is patient-centric, go to the Medical Staff website: http://medicalstaff.stanfordhospital.org/. The policy was adopted by the Medical Staff Executive Committee by a 21 to 1 vote in October. (As of Nov 4, all H1N1 vaccine received at the Medical Center had been deployed for high risk pediatric and OB patients at LPCH as directed by the Santa Clara Department of Public Health. Vaccine supplies were requested and were pending to cover all employees, patients, physicians and trainees free of charge.)
Due to the severity of the H1N1 flu and its potential to spread to patients, children and expectant mothers, both SHC and Packard Hospitals no longer allow non-patient visitors or family members under the age of 16 in the hospital. “Stanford Hospital and Packard Children’s take the health risks associated with the H1N1 flu very seriously,” said Martha Marsh, President and CEO of SHC, in announcing the policy on Oct. 19. “We hope to have an uneventful flu season and are optimistic that this proactive strategy will aid in limiting the presence and spread of H1N1 throughout the hospitals." >>SEE MORE
