Breast Smart Probe
Stefanie Jeffrey Stefanie Jeffrey, assistant professor of surgery and chief of breast surgery at Stanford, is shown with the breast smart probe, for use in breast cancer detection and analysis. The portable probe, still in its preliminary stages, is being designed to "see" a lump, determine whether or not the lump is cancerous and then quickly predict how the individual patient's disease may progress. The multimodality device senses several components of the tissue, including density and cell structure using pressure and visual measurements. Collaborating on the project with Jeffrey is Robert Mah, of the Neuroengineering Laboratory at NASA's Ames Research Center. COLUMNS
