
Stanford Medical Group is fortunate to have had a number of committted and caring physicians and other health care professionals who have devoted a significant portion of their professional careers in developing the clinical and educational programs at Stanford School of Medicine. Dr. MacKay came to Stanford Medical Group after a long and distinguished career as a faculty member in Infectious Diseases at Dartmouth School of Medicine. During his tenure at SMG, Dr. MacKay was an invaluable resource for the physicians and patients concerning the diagnosis and care of infectious diseases and was a role model for the all physicians, especially in terms of developing and maintaining an active self-directed learning process. We celebrate his humor, his caring attitude, and his willingess to always help others -- colleague or patient. Happy retirement, Don!
Dr. Brown brought her unique skills in geriatric medicine and her broad experience with resident education and patient skills to Stanford Medical Group. While the most recent stay was only a year, Dr. Brown actually worked at SMG from 1989-1991 before moving to Stanford Mid-Penninsula to become a full-time geriatrician. She assumed the medical directorshp of Mid-Penninsula Hospice in January, 1998.
Dr. Ulmer directed the medical consultation service for Stanford Medical Group and Stanford University Hospital and was the first hospitalist at Stanford Medical Group. During his tenure, Dr. Ulmer brought together medical consultation and inpatient attending services for Cowell Student Health Center, Stanford Coastside Clinic, and Stanford Family Practice. Dr. Ulmer left SMG to continue his medical training in Orthopedics at University of Oregon Health Sciences University . We greatly benefited from his advancement of the hospitalist function at SMG and have now created a permanent position at SMG for a hospital-based physician.
Specializing in Women's Health, Ms. Boehm was an important contributor to the training of medicine residents and in updating the faculty in issues concerning the care of women. In addition, her compassion and caring was very much valued and appreciated by her patients and colleagues. Ms. Boehm has assumed a faculty position in the School of Nursing at the University of Minnesota.
Dr. Yuen was active in improving practice efficiency and expanding the opportunities for ongoing CME for the SMG physicians. She has joined the General Internal Medicine Fellowship at Stanford in the Division of General Internal Medicine at Stanford School of Medicine.
Dr. Leslie developed a significant portion of the medical school curriculum regarding the patient-physician relationship and the curriculum for the medical residents directed at substance abuse and the interface between psychiatry and general internal medicine. Dr. Leslie has also published poetry in the Annals of Internal Medicine. Dr. Leslie is working in Belgium.
Dr. Croke advanced the idea of an academic practice as both a place for excellent teaching and for outstanding , cost-effective patient care. Dr. Croke continues to teach on the undergraduate campus of Stanford University and is active in Physicians for Social Responsilibity. Dr. Croke is in private practice at the Palo Alto Medical Clinic in Palo Alto, California.
Dr. Gold was a dedicated teacher who made very significant contributions to the teaching of medical students in the pre-clinical years, with a focus on the patient interview and physical exam. At SMG, she was a highly valued and caring physician who advanced our understanding and focus on balancing a career in general medicine with other life roles. Dr. Gold is in private practice at the Palo Alto Medical Clinic in Palo Alto, California.
Dr. Wood challenged us to teach the 'art' of medicine as equally important with the science of medicine at Stanford Medical Group. Dr. Wood is in private practice in Palo Alto, Calfornia.
Dr. Jones was an all around excellent clinician and a winner of numerous teaching awards during his tenure at Stanford Medical Group. He is in private practice at the Palo Alto Medical Clinic in Palo Alto, California.
Dr. Grimes left SMG to obtain an Masters in Business Administration at Stanford University, served as a White House Fellow and is now working with a local biotechnology firm. Dr. Grimes is still teaching at Stanford in the Internal Medicine Clinic.
