Metagenomics for viral discovery
Eric Delwart
The application of high throughput sequencing for viral metagenomics is resulting in the identification of numerous human viruses. The methodology, viral taxonomy, and some of the new DNA and RNA viral genomes being characterized (picornaviruses, astroviruses, parvoviruses, and circoviruses), together with their geographic distribution and possible association with disease, will be described. Bioinformatics approaches beside BLAST which may help detect highly divergent viruses will be discussed.
