Residency and Subspecialty Training in Pathology at Stanford University Medical Center

The Department of Pathology of Stanford University seeks to train outstanding academically-oriented candidates for leadership positions in pathology.

• Residency Program. We offer residency training in Anatomic Pathology (AP) only, Clinical Pathology (CP) only, and combined AP and CP (AP/CP). The overall goal of our program is to provide in-depth, flexible training in all aspects of pathology, leading to board certification in AP, CP or AP/CP.

• Clinical Fellowship Programs. We offer accredited clinical fellowships in Dermatopathology (2 positions, contact Dr. Sabine Kohler), Hematopathology (2 positions, contact Dr. Daniel Arber), Neuropathology (2 positions, contact Dr. Hannes Vogel), and Molecular Genetic Pathology (1 position, contact Dr. James Zehnder), and Cytopathology (1 position, contact Dr. Christina Kong). We also offer up to 6 positions each year for advanced training in Surgical Pathology (our non-accredited "Hot Seat" Fellowship in Surgical Pathology, contact Dr. Gerald Berry), as well as non-accredited fellowships in Autopsy Pathology (1 position, contact Dr. Donald Regula) and Immunopathology (2 positions, contact Dr. Roger Warnke). To be considered for any of these fellowships, internal or external candidates must have completed at least 2 years of training in AP (see section describing the individual fellowships)

Guarantees to Residents in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology and to Clinical Fellows

The faculty believe it is essential that trainees considering any residency or clinical fellowship have a clear understanding of which features are certain (i.e., guaranteed) and which are subject to availability or other considerations. Assuming continued satisfactory performance, the following aspects of our program are guaranteed to our trainees.

• Board eligibility in the selected program (AP only, AP/CP, or CP only tracks, or in the subspecialties covered by our accredited fellowships). Note: Although the American Board of Pathology has recently eliminated the "credentialing year" requirement for board certification in AP, CP or AP/CP, we strongly recommend that all AP/CP residents take an optional additional year of AP training as the fifth year of their AP/CP program (see immediately below).

• A fifth year of training, in AP, for all AP/CP residents who wish to take advantage of this program. This guarantee is provided because the faculty believes that more than 2 years of training in AP is required for the practice of surgical pathology. AP/CP residents who elect this option may take a third year of AP training as the fifth year of their training. Residents interested in this option either may apply for our Surgical Pathology Fellowship or take an alternative year of AP training that will be designed in conjunction with the faculty in accord with the trainee's career plans.

• Up to three-year research funding for AP only or CP only residents pursuing an investigative career. This program is designed to help residents launch a career in which a majority of their effort will be devoted to extra-murally funded research. The resident and her/his mentor are expected to seek outside (e.g., NIH K08, etc.) support for the research program. Until the external award is received, or if the external award does not provide salary support at the equivalent PGY level plus the standard housing benefit (see below), then the Department of Pathology will supplement the resident's salary to that level. The Department will assist our residents in finding a suitable laboratory at Stanford for their research training; this laboratory may be either within or outside of the Department of Pathology. In most cases, those seeking NIH K08 awards will be appointed to the academic rank of Instructor in the Department of Pathology.

• Annual housing assistance of $8,400. This amount (which, like salary, is taxable) is in addition to the standard salary (and the $1,000 annual educational reimbursement from Stanford Hospital & Clinics (SHC)) and is provided by the Department of Pathology. New residents also receive a one time housing allowance of $3,000, of which $1200 may be used for moving expenses from Stanford Hospital and Clinics. We anticipate that the need for the housing supplement will continue, and we will set the amount of the annual supplement 4 years in advance, based on an assessment of the local housing market. The current rate ($8,400 per year) has been set for the 2002 through 2007 academic years.
