| The Blood Center
is the primary supplier of blood components for Stanford Health
Services and Packard Children's Hospital. The Blood Center
draws approximately 30,000 whole blood donations each year,
and processes these collections into red cell, platelet, plasma,
and cryoprecipitate products for transfusion, as well as buffy
coats for research. In addition, the Center performs 6,000
platelet apheresis collections per year. Blood donor testing
and blood component processing are performed on the premises.
The Blood Center also includes a flow cytometry laboratory,
which performs leukocyte subset and phenotype analysis, and
a histocompatibility laboratory which performs both serological
and DNA based clinical HLA typing, compatibility testing,
and platelet antibody testing.
