Research Description
Through the integrated effort of scholars, physicians and scientists in
the Stanford Center for Biomedical Ethics, the Departments of Medicine
and Radiology, and other SUMC and Stanford Departments, we are building
a new program dedicated to biomedical ethics in the neurosciences and
medical imaging. As a launch point, the first subset of issues we are
studying are related to a range of ethical issues associated with neuroimaging
in research and in clinical pediatric and adult neuroimaging practice.
For example, we are surveying neuroimaging research laboratories that
use fMRI in order to understand the issues and dilemmas they face when
detecting incidental brain abnormalities. We are also studying the emergence
and implications of in utero and neonatal MR, as well as the market place
for consumer-driven neuroimaging. Studies are also planned in the areas
of bioethics and addiction, and bioethical issues in the development of
new biologic markers for imaging CNS disorders such as stroke, and in
cancer imaging, such as the use of MRI for screening for women at high
risk for breast cancer. Ê
