Even though rural communities contain about 20% of America’s population, less than 10% of physicians practice in these communities. Likewise, fewer dentists practice in rural areas. Even the majority of EMS first responders in rural areas are volunteers.
Given these statistics, it is important to raise public awareness of the health issues facing patients and families in rural communities. It is also imperative to equip the professionals practicing in these communities, along with urban professionals who may wish to participate in rural outreach with the facts, research and tools that they need to provide optimal healthcare to rural veterans and residents.
