Benchmarking Transverse Spin Relaxation Based Oxygenation Measurements in the Brain during Hypercapnia and Hypoxia
To date, researchers have used different MRI signal relaxation rates to measure tissue oxygenation, as well as different gaseous challenges to perturb oxygenation and validate their techniques. In this study, we simultaneously assesse the intra-scan reproducibility of the three MRI transverse relaxation rates (R2’, R2* and R2) for brain tissue oxygenation mapping, and measure the changes in these parameters with inhalation of different gases that increased and decreased oxygenation. Our results provide reproducibility benchmarks for fellow researchers, guidelines for gas challenge paradigms, and recommendations to use R2’ as the relaxation metric for studying brain tissue oxygenation.
