Research Management Group (RMG)

NSF 16-545 Materials Research Science and Engineering Centers

**Limited program-only one preliminary preliminary proposal is permitted from Stanford as LEAD institution, therefore, a university-wide internal selection process is required.**

The internal selection process for 2016 has been completed. This webpage is for your reference only.

Guidelines:
http://www.nsf.gov/pubs/2016/nsf16545/nsf16545.htm

Timeline:

Dean of Research Office deadline: Tuesday, April 5, 2016, 5 p.m. (see internal submission guidelines below)
Preliminary proposal: July 1, 2016
Full proposal (by invitation only): Dec. 2, 2016

# applications: 1

Eligibility:

Faculty with PI eligibility
An individual may be the Principal Investigator (PI) or co-PI for only one preliminary proposal.

Amount of funding:

Individual MRSEC awards are expected to range in size from about $2.2 million/year to a maximum of $4 million/year, depending on the number of Interdisciplinary Research Groups (IRGs). Awards will be made for an initial duration of up to six years, but the level of funding is contingent on successful progress and upon the outcome of external review.

Purpose:

Materials Research Science and Engineering Centers (MRSECs) provide sustained support of interdisciplinary materials research and education of the highest quality while addressing fundamental problems in science and engineering. MRSECs address research of a scope and complexity requiring the scale, synergy, and interdisciplinarity provided by a campus-based research center. They support materials research infrastructure in the United States, promote active collaboration between universities and other sectors, including industry and international institutions, and contribute to the development of a national network of university-based centers in materials research, education, and facilities. A  MRSEC may be located at a single institution, or may involve multiple institutions in partnership.

INTERNAL SUBMISSION GUIDELINES

REMINDER-the internal selection process is only for proposals where Stanford is the LEAD Institution.

By Tuesday, April 5, 2016, 5 p.m., please submit one PDF file containing the following in the order listed below to:

Institutional representative (OSR): not applicable. You do not have to prepare a PDRF form or submit your internal proposals through your institutional representative.

1) Title Page
Name of this RFA: NSF 16-545 Materials Research Science and Engineering Centers
Name of this RFA:
Project Title
PI name, title, department, address, email, phone
Provide name, title, department, email of individuals who are leading your IRGs-Interdisciplinary Research Groups (a minimum of 2 and a maximum of 5 IRGs are required)

2) Proposal (3 pages)
Format: single spaced, 1/2 inch margin, Arial or Helvetica font size 11 or larger. References and illustrations not included in the page total.
Please describe your proposal. Your MRSEC proposal must contain at least 2 and a maximum of 3 IRG-Interdisciplinary Research Groups. Please describe these groups. The IRGs in a center may be topically related, or they may address different topical aspects of materials research. A single center at an organization allows efficient usage of resources, including common infrastructure, and better coordination of education and other activities of the center. Note: a MRSEC may be located at a single institution, or may involve multiple institutions in partnership.

3) PI biosketch (include other support, pending and current, sponsor, term and amount of funding)

Selection Process

Your proposals will be reviewed by the Dean of Research Internal Review committee. That committee will select the preliminary proposal to represent Stanford.
